Perfume
What types and strengths of perfume are there?
It can sometimes be confusing to understand what each type of perfume exactly means and which one to choose. Below is a brief summary to help you get started!
The strength of a perfume relates to the amount of fragrance oil in the perfume. Generally speaking, the more fragrance oil it contains, the longer the scent will linger on your skin.
- Extrait de Parfum
Strength: 20%-30%
Duration: 12 hours - Eau de Parfum (EdP)
Strength: 10%-20%
Duration: 8 hours - Eau de Toilette (EdT)
Strength: 5%-15%
Duration: 4-7 hours - Eau de Cologne (EdC)
Strength: 2%-4%
Duration: 2-3 hours - Eau Fraiche
Strength: 1%-3%
Duration: 2 hours - Perfume oils
Strength: 10%-20%
Duration: 8 hours
* The duration and strength are an indication and may vary per perfume and skin type.
When we talk about the concentrations of essential oils in the different categories, this only applies to natural perfumes where the essential oils are guaranteed to be made directly from pure essential oils. In other common perfumes, these fragrance combinations are made from synthetic "perfume extracts" and are often entirely artificial and not natural. Some of these "perfume extracts" can even come from animals.
So, it is always important to check the ingredients and certifications of the perfumes you buy, to ensure that they are completely natural and vegan, if that is important to you.
Is it true that perfume can smell different on me than on someone else?
That is possible. Each person has their own unique scent. This is because our skin has different pH levels. What may be perceived as a pleasant fragrance by one person can be considered unpleasant by another.
Can you mix perfumes?
That is possible, but it is recommended to first explore the concept of layering as not all combinations of scents result in a positive outcome.
Perfume layering involves applying multiple fragrance products with different scent notes on top of each other to create a more complex and personalized fragrance. By combining perfume, body lotion, and oil, for example, you can make the scent last longer and penetrate deeper into the skin. The result is a unique fragrance experience that matches your personal style and preferences.

How and where do you apply perfume?
Applying perfume is an art in itself, as the right technique and placement can ensure that the scent lasts longer and is better appreciated. Here’s a brief explanation on how and where to apply perfume:
1. Pulse Points: The best places to apply perfume are on your pulse points, where your skin is warmer and the scent spreads well. These points are usually on the inside of your wrists, the sides of your neck, behind your ears, on your décolletage, and on the inside of your elbows. The warmth in these areas helps activate and spread the fragrance.
2. Don’t Rub: When applying perfume, don’t rub your wrists together. This can break the fragrance molecules and alter the scent. Instead, gently dab your wrists together to distribute the fragrance.
3. Don’t Spray in the Air and Walk Through It: Spraying perfume in the air and walking through it is a waste of perfume and will not help the scent cling to your skin. It’s best to apply it directly to your skin.
4. Be Careful with Clothes: While perfume can be applied to clothing, it can damage certain fabrics or leave stains. If you want to wear perfume on clothing, test it first in an inconspicuous spot.
5. Pay Attention to Your Skin Type: Perfume can react differently to different skin types. Dry skin may cause the scent to fade more quickly, while oily skin can hold the fragrance longer. Experiment with the amount you apply and how often, depending on your skin type.
6. Less is More: Overusing perfume can be overwhelming and bothersome to others. Stick to a few sprays or drops and adjust based on the perfume’s concentration.
The most important thing to remember is that perfume should be subtle and add a personal touch to your style and personality. With the right technique and placement, you can ensure that your perfume lasts all day and leaves an unforgettable impression.
Does perfume have an expiration date?
Perfume is one of those delightful luxury products we cherish, but what happens to perfume over time? Does it have an expiration date?
Yes, perfume does have an expiration date, but it’s not a fixed rule like with food. Instead, the lifespan of perfume depends on several factors, including the composition, storage, and exposure to light and heat.
Generally, well-stored perfumes can last several years or even decades without significantly losing quality. Here are some tips to extend the lifespan of your perfume:
- Storage: Keep your perfume bottles in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Bathrooms, due to fluctuating humidity and temperature, are not ideal for perfume storage.
- Original packaging: The original box the perfume came in can help protect it from light and air. If you still have the box, store it there.
- Sealed cap: Make sure the cap of the perfume bottle is tightly closed when you’re not using it. This prevents air from affecting the fragrance.
- Fragrance composition: Some perfumes, especially those with a high content of natural ingredients, may change over time. Regularly check the scent to see if it’s still to your liking.
- Test your perfume: If your perfume is older, you can test a small amount on your skin to see if the fragrance is still intact before applying it generously.
Keep in mind that the lifespan of perfume varies from brand to brand and even from scent to scent. Some fragrances can last longer than others due to specific ingredients and composition. However, in general, perfume, when stored correctly, can provide many years of enjoyment without losing quality.
